Plaintiff Marrissa Hackett went to the New Haven, CT Planned Parenthood, where nurse practitioner Stephanie Malia placed an IUD. The IUD failed, and Hackett became pregnant. However, PP nurse practioner Stephanie Malia failed to diagnose Hackett's 14-week gestation pregnancy at her IUD checkup. Hackett learned for certain she was pregnant at 31 weeks. At this time, Marrissa Hackett "was an unmarried college student with no plans to start a family," and she could not get an abortion this late in the pregnancy. Hackett sued the nurse practitioner and PP of Southern New Haven for the cost of raising her son. See pages 7-13.
