The Alaska Board of Medicine disciplines Michael Merrick after he failed to diagnose a myocardial infarction (heart attack), On the evening of April 21, 1983, 26-year-old Patrick Daniels arrived at the emergency room with severe chest pain. His wife reported Patrick's arms were also feeling funny. Dr. Merrick misread the patient's EKG's and failed to diagnose a myocardial infarction. Instead, Dr. Merrick sent Patrick back home -- with a prescription for an "infection." Patrick went to bed but woke up at 2:15 am, "gasping for breath, seizing and moaning. He collapsed on the bed." His wife called paramedics who tried to save Patrick's life, administering CPR and defibrillating him. They took him back to the hospital, where Dr. Merrick unsuccessfully tried to revive the patient he had dismissed hours earlier as having a mere "infection." At 4:08 am, 26-year-old Patrick Daniels was pronounced dead. The Alaska Medical Board censured Dr. Merrick for professional incompetence and prohibited him from practicing emergency room medicine.
