Other Info

In 1978, Dr. John Barton botched an abortion on patient Shelby Moran at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.  The botched procedure left the 39-year-old mother of five permanently brain damaged.  Disoriented and unable to perform basic tasks, Shelby had to be cared for in a nursing home for the rest of her life.  A jury awarded Shelby Moran’s family $9.5 million for her medical costs, but the award was overturned by an appeals court.  Permanently disabled by her botched abortion, Shelby languished in the nursing home from 1978 to 1999, until her death at age 60.
